Financial Literacy Department
How do I create a budget? What is compound interest? How can I use credit cards wisely and avoid consumer debt? How do I prepare my kids to be savers and not spenders? The answers to these questions are not usually taught in schools, yet basic money skills such as these are essential to our financial wellbeing. Northfield Community LDC's Financial Literacy department's workshops and training programs bring this vital information to Staten Islanders of all ages in accessible, hands-on formats tailored to their needs and ability levels.
We present our programs to schools, civic and community organizations and through social service agencies at no cost to the partering institutions or to participants. We offers stand-alone workshops and workshop series on topics such as personal budgeting, raising "money-smart" kids, and the workings of our nation's monetary system. All our department staff are bilingual and all programs are offered in English or Spanish.
Our Programs
For elementary and middle school students we offer workshops tailored to their age level and needs, with plenty of hands-on involvement and real-world application to keep students engaged. Our teen workshops are based on the highly acclaimed National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) high school curriculum. We also offer teacher training in the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program. As with all our workshops, there is no cost to institutions or particpants and all materials are provided.
Northfield LDC's Financial Literacy department also offers a wide range of adult programming. In partnership with organizations such as El Centro de la Hospitalidad, we provide financial literacy education and an introduction to the U.S. banking system to Staten Island's Spanish-speaking population. We also offer parent and parent-child workshops featuring basic financial literacy games and activites to use with your kids from toddlers to teens.
Funding for the Financial Literacy Program is generously provided by The New York Community Trust and the SI Bank & Trust Foundation.
